Extradition decision of Julian Assange to US protested with double-decker bus in London
LONDON, UK - JULY 1: A protest was held with a bus in the capital London, UK against the decision to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the US, on Friday (July 1).
Banners saying "Free Assange", "Journalism is not a crime" and "Do not extradite Assange" were hung on an old red bus, which is among the symbols of the capital.
Protesters gathered in front of the Home Office, got on the bus after the speeches and the bus moved towards the Westminster.
Among the protesters there were Assange's father John Shipton, his brother Gabriel Shipton, Australian journalist John Pilger and singer David Rovics.
Assange faces extradition from Britain to the US where he could face 175 years in prison after exposing secrets about the atrocities of the war in Iraq.
Assange's extradition order was passed to the secretary by the UK courts last month, confirming that the US assurances on how Assange would be treated were sufficient for extradition.
The order said the UK courts found that the extradition would not be "incompatible with his human rights," adding that he would be "treated appropriately" in the US. Assange will face 18 counts of hacking the US government computers and violating the espionage law if he is extradited to the US and a potential prison sentence for years. He was dragged out of Ecuador’s embassy building in London last year, where he took refuge for more than seven years. (Footage by Bilal Acar/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
