Jim Carrey Explains How Playing "Ace Venture" Allowed Him to Act Like He Does Onstage

Interviewer: Now Ace is only a character that you could play. Jim: Yeah Tara: Definitely, now I know that you co-wrote the film, I mean is Ventura a character that you wrote or? Jim Carrey: No well – well Ace Ventura the pet detective concept existed um but ah the character didn’t exist I mean as far as you know the way, you know I played him. Ah it’s basically you know its me on stage basically and when I sat down with Tom at the beginning of the film, Tom Shadyac ah he – he ah he said you know nobody's ever really given you something and said you know be what you are on stage, you know and ah and so this was the first time I – I, you know sat back and said ok Tom but ah you know it’s going to get crazy you know it’s going to get really nuts, and so we literally call each other ever night after filming and go – and go what are we doing (Laughs) this is insane, you know but we just took the chance. We went over the top and just never looked back.
