U.S. Tariffs Threaten India's Fishing Industry
KERALA, INDIA - AUGUST 12: Fishermen take a break at the daily fish auction at the Chellanam fishing harbor on August 12, 2025 in Kerala, India. Compared to last year, shrimp prices have fallen by around ₹70 due to imposed tariffs and climate change. U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an order mandating a 25 per cent tariff on India, followed by a further 25 per cent that is set to go into effect on later this month due to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. The US is the largest importer of Indian seafood, but it is estimated that the tariff hike will drop the export of frozen shrimp from India by at least 30 percent.
