Independent Israeli MP Uri Avnery on peace in Israel; 1969

Close up shot of Independent MP Uri Avnery speaking about peace in Israel. "We have never been in peace in this country for one single day. I'm 45 years old, I haven't known one day of peace in this country. So because of this everything which pertains to war is very well organised in this country, and all the mental patterns for war do exist, brilliantly sometimes, while all the patterns pertaining to peace and necessary for peace just don't exist. They never existed in reality, so when anyone talks about peace in this country he is not realistic, he doesn't sound realistic [...] This is one of the greatest obstacle confronting us, it's very difficult to make people visualise what peace means, what peace is. People think about peace in mythical terms, something which only the Messiah can bring, some day the Arabs and us will sit together at one big table and we love each other and embrace each other and say it has all been a great big misunderstanding and we really love each other. I mean this kind of peace is never going to happen, never did in history, and nothing less will satisfy us. So when people like me are coming and say 'we want a smaller peace, a little piece of peace to start with', they say 'no! It's impossible! It's the destruction of the state' and so on and so on". 1969 (LDFM133J/91 - AEVZ001J)
