Tegucigalpa, HONDURAS: Silhouette of a scarlet macaws taken at the El Picacho municipal zoo in the north of Tegucigalpa, on May 11th, 2007. Some 200 species of animals are in danger of extinction in Honduras due to the excessive hunting taking place, mainly for export purposes, the Honduran Forest Development Coorporation (COHDEFOR). According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), most of the animals captured are taken illegally form Central America to the United States and Europe. The list of endangered animal in Honduras includes the white-tailed deer, the ape of the night, the cougar, the jaguar, the green iguana, the manatee, the grey fox, the toucan, the margay, the macaw and the parakeet.
