Bali Works To Eradicate Rabies Island-Wide
DENPASAR, BALI, INDONESIA - DECEMBER 02: The owner of a dog preapres for tie a vaccination red collar on a dog during an outbreak of rabies on December 2, 2010 in District Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia. The Balinese government, through the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), has begun a mass vaccination program to inoculate 350,000 of the island's dog population to put an end to the rabies outbreak that has caused the deaths of over 90 people since 2008. In September 2010, after a pilot program conducted by the WSPA and BAWA to show that inoculating the dogs is more effective at curbing the disease than culling, the Balinese government signed an agreement to stop killing the island's roaming dogs to control the problem and monitor the process to ensure that 70% of the dogs are inoculated until the island is rabies free. To date, 94,000 Bali dogs have been vaccinated. (Photo by Ulet Ifansasti/Getty Images)
