View across the calm turquoise waters of Cala Lazarina, also known as Cala di l'Achiarinu, Lavezzu, Îles Lavezzi, Bonifacio, Corse-du-Sud, Corse, France, Europe. Lying within the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve, the Îles Lavezzi archipelago comprises a handful of granite islands and reefs in the Strait of Bonifacio between Corsica and Sardinia. Tragically, in February 1855, the island of Lavezzu was the scene of one of the worst maritime disasters in Mediterranean history when the French frigate Sémillante, en route to the Crimean War, was driven into rocks during a storm, resulting in the loss of almost 700 soldiers and crew. The Sémillante Pyramid, a monument commemorating the shipwreck, stands on a small rocky island visible from the shore.
