Radio Building with reflections at Radio Kootwijk, the Netherlands - Stockfoto

Building A of Radio Kootwijk was built in the years 1918-1923 in Art Deco style. Dutch architect Julius Luthmann designed it. It was built as a building for a shortwave radio transmitter. The transmitter played an important role in the 20th century as a communication facility between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies. This building was known as 'Building A'. Later, it got nicknames like 'The Cathedral' (it looks a bit like the church of Veere, in the Netherlands) or 'The Sphynx'. Due to the development of new technologies like Communications satellites, Radio Kootwijk lost its position as main overseas wireless connection point of the Netherlands. In 1980, the last transmission mast was blown up.
