The flag of the United States territory of Guam was officially adopted on February 9, 1948. This territorial flag features a dark blue background with a narrow red border surrounding all sides; the addition of the red border came later. The significance of the red border lies in its representation of the bloodshed during World War II and the historical sovereignty of Spain over the territory. At the center of the flag lies the territory's seal, an almond-shaped emblem. This emblem depicts a traditional proa sailing in Hagåtña Bay near Hagåtña, with the word GUAM spelled out in red letters. The shape of the emblem is reminiscent of the slingshot stones once used by the ancient Chamorro people of Guam. Additionally, the background of the emblem portrays the distinct landform of Two Lovers Point cliff on the island. The design of the flag, including the shape of the emblem, was approved by Charles Alan Pownall, the military Governor of Guam, in 1948. This flag stands as a proud symbol of Guam's rich cultural heritage, its history, and its connection to the United States.
