It was built in 1971 to commemorate the 2,500th year of the foundation of the Imperial State of Iran. It was previously named Shahyad Tower ("Shah's Memorial Tower" in Persian).The Azadi tower is about 45 meters tall and is covered with marble.It is one of the symbols of Tehran.
