Kotb in-studio x-talks with Bush Hager in her New York State home: “HODA KOTB (10:00:11): Hey, guys. It is Monday. It is June the 8th. We hope that you had a safe and healthy weekend. Here in New York City, finally, we're beginning phase one of the reopening, so slowly but surely kind of baby steps to getting back to normal. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:00:26): Hm-Mm. If you want a place to feel good, you are at the right place. We have a show packed full of so much goodness, including the story of a seventeen-year-old who walked arm-in-arm with his town’s police chief not only inspiring his community but the country. HODA KOTB (10:00:40): And we're also going to meet a mom who achieved her dream at forty-nine alongside her daughter. I think we should just say what it is because these are a mom and daughter who both became doctors. They both graduated med school and it’s like one of the most inspiring stories I think either of-- either of us have seen in a while, right, Jenna? JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:00:58): Once again, Hoda and I were on the Zoom in their graduation party crying while-- while others might not have been. HODA KOTB (10:01:06): Right. There-- yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:01:06): But it is a beautiful story of resilience and also the power of mother and daughter relationship. HODA KOTB (10:01:12): Oh, it was so cool. So what went on in the Hager household this weekend? JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:01:17): You know, it’s-- we did a lot of-- a lot of nothing. HODA KOTB (10:01:19): Hm-Mm. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:01:19): We were laying around. We were reading. We tried to get outside. It was-- it was a relaxing weekend and I felt like we all kind of just took some breaths. HODA KOTB (10:01:30): Yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:01:30): How about-- how about you? HODA KOTB (10:01:31): Well, you also-- we're going to get to it a minute, but you also participated in a big graduation, a 2020 graduation, kind of, extravaganza, a four-hour thing that I think-- you know it’s funny, graduation speeches are uplifting anyway, you gave one, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, you know, the Obamas, like there were so many people, so much music but it lifted everybody up. You know, it was interesting, a lot of people spent the weekend protesting. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:01:56): Yes. HODA KOTB (10:01:57): If you look from coast to coast, the protests seemed to have grown over the days. That’s Washington, DC. It was huge. They had-- that’s Los Angeles. This was this weekend. Keep in mind on a beautiful weekend, people have choices on where they want to spend their-- their time and that’s where they chose to spend it. Philly had a huge protest as well. People marched overall mostly peaceful. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:02:22): Yes. HODA KOTB (10:02:22): And I think it just shows that the momentum of these-- of these protests, it's not something that you’re like, oh, is that over? You really do feel kind of a tectonic plate switch feeling right now. And also the curfews are lifted in New York, Chicago and Philly. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:02:38): Because not only is it growing but they're also becoming more peaceful-- HODA KOTB (10:02:41): Yeah. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:02:41): --which means that more people are marching. HODA KOTB (10:02:44): Yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:02:44): And we have-- and we will say that the final public memorial for George Floyd today is in his hometown of Houston. It's followed by private services tomorrow. HODA KOTB (10:02:54): Yeah. You know, a lot of things are going on. If you look at, you know, those protests, Jenna, sometimes you see people with signs and placards and sometimes you-- you see all kinds of stuff. But I thought in Philly, they had something really cool. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:03:06): Okay. This was a really special moment in Philadelphia on Saturday. A couple of newlyweds, Kerry-Anne Perkins and Michael Gordon, they were taking photos outside of the Logan Hotel where they were holding a micro wedding, which I think just means a few people. HODA KOTB (10:03:20): Yeah. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:03:20): That's when hundreds of protesters walked by and they decided to join in for a moment of solidarity. I love that. You know, it went from a micro wedding to a-- to a large-- HODA KOTB (10:03:32): Congrats. Yeah. I mean, it was a real-- it’s just-- it's just such a moment there. And there were-- there were also in Raleigh, North Carolina. There was another moment. There were photos that captured the moment that Xavier Young popped the question to his girlfriend, Marjorie Alston. And it just-- it’s like, you know, if you want to know that something that you will never forget, it's going to be that moment. And afterwards, Xavier said this, "What better place and what better time! We’re protesting something unjust and ugly and I felt like I could bring beauty and light to the situation." JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:04:05): Aw. HODA KOTB (10:04:05): And I think that's what they did. (10:04:07): Speaking of beauty and light, the 2020 YouTube special, this star-studded graduation, Dear Class of 2020. So there were tons of people in this thing. Seventy popstars and celebrities and public figures, they all participated. It was like all kinds of celebs, familiar faces. Natalie Morales gave a little shout-out to the grads, which was awesome. And then there's this other girl who I met a couple times named Jenna. But, Jenna, you really-- you actually had such a beautiful, poignant thing to share. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:04:38): Well, yeah. I mean, I wrote this a couple weeks ago and I-- so I shared my grandfather’s list of rules, which I've told you, that he lived by and then I urged graduates to create their own. Take a look. (10:04:51): Class of 2020, we made you. Create your own list filled with rules that will help you. Create a life of purpose and meaning. And when the world opens up again, we can all be a little better than before at by creating a letter of love to our world, making it more safe, peaceful and just for all. The world will be better because of you. HODA KOTB (10:05:20): Jenna, good girl. That was good, really great and that whole list of what your grandfather’s rules to live by are great ones and they're on our website. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:05:29): I thought it was really interesting because what the assignment was to write a letter to the class of 2020. HODA KOTB (10:05:36): Ah. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:05:36): And when I was thinking about that, I thought, you know, our lives should be like love letters. They should be love letters to ourselves, like what fills us up, what gives us joy and we should be specific in that-- HODA KOTB (10:05:48): Yeah. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:05:48): --but they also should be letters of devotion to our world and to people that we may never even meet. And so I-- you know, I just thought like they deserve letters but also I think our job, as humans, is to write letters to ourselves but also to the world about how we can make this place a place that we’re proud of for our kids. HODA KOTB (10:06:09): I think that’s brilliant. Beautifully put. Something else that was beautiful in that graduation ceremony was Mariah Carey who sang with the cast of Schitt’s Creek. It was so crazy. Listen. (10:06:19): (Excerpt from Mariah Carey singing) HODA KOTB (10:06:31): Come on. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:06:31): Wait. HODA KOTB (10:06:32): Uh-Huh. What? Don’t you love everything that’s happening? I don't-- I actually didn’t see this part. I don't-- I think they may have sung and then she sang. Look at-- oh, my gosh, come on. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:06:43): Wait. I’m shocked beyond belief. I didn’t know that there was that mash-up. That seems like a very unlikely yet perfect union, right? HODA KOTB (10:06:53): I know. I want to-- I literally want to just spend part of the day and just watch the whole thing because I feel like that that’s-- that was something that will lift us up. Here's something else that will. Class of 2020, a high school kid named Jared, he was graduating from-- in California, no ceremony, of course. So he-- they dressed up his front yard. He had a commencement dance and performance. Check it out. (10:07:13): (Excerpt from internet video) HODA KOTB (10:07:32): His mom posted that video. She wrote, "COVID thought it got your graduation canceled! Mommy’s got you." JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:07:37): Oh. Don’t you love that? HODA KOTB (10:07:40): Yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:07:42): First of all, I love his dance moves. But second of all, I love the phrase mommy’s got you. HODA KOTB (10:07:46): Mommy’s got you to a high school-- oh. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:07:49): Of course she did. HODA KOTB (10:07:49): Yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:07:51): Speaking of busting a move, check out this fast-food employee in England. He just wanted to entertain customers waiting in their cars in the parking lot. HODA KOTB (10:08:00): Oh, my God. (10:08:01): (Excerpt from internet video) HODA KOTB (10:08:20): I don’t know what I love more, the guy dancing or the-- or the ladies in the car laughing. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:08:26): I just think it shows us that we need dancing. HODA KOTB (10:08:30): Come on, man. He's got-- look at him. He’s got moves. Made everybody’s day. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:08:36): You know, we were talking about graduations. And I know that you have a habit of watching graduation speeches, sort of, on your own. Is that true? HODA KOTB (10:08:46): Oh, my God, I love-- by the way, Jenna, I got to tell you. I got one and I've got a-- I' going to post it because I just-- I was just watching it. I just feel like when someone writes a graduation speech, it’s the best that they have in them. They pine over them, they try to figure out the right words. What would you say you-- what would you want to give to a-- someone who’s just venturing out in the world? And I realized it works for all of us. If you are-- if you wake up and you feel funky and you're like, ugh, the world is crummy, just google like top ten graduation speeches. Hit play and just sit back for a second and I bet you you’ll feel a ton, a ton better than you did before. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:09:22): And, you know, we'll still be having people on our show the next couple weeks giving a little graduation talk because people are graduating. HODA KOTB (10:09:29): Yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:09:30): You know it. You’re right. I worked so hard on that speech. HODA KOTB (10:09:33): Yes, yes. JENNA BUSH HAGER (10:09:35): In a way that I-- we both talked some but I was like, oh, gosh, nervous and working hard and sitting in this exact seat like I always do. HODA KOTB (10:09:44): By the way, I love that.”
