People Magazine Senior Editor Kate Coyne joins Natalie Morales live in Studio 1A. NATALIE MORALES: Kate, good morning. Ms. KATE COYNE: Good morning. MORALES: Let's start off with that letter that Conan wrote yesterday which he addressed to the people of the Earth and had to insert a little humor there given the situation. Ms. COYNE: Yes. MORALES: And he writes that, "Shifting `The Tonight Show' to 12:05 would seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. That `The Tonight Show' at 12:05 simply isn't `The Tonight Show.' I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction." So this is a franchise he clearly believes in. And as he said, he dreamt about being there, although--albeit, made a joke out of that as well. But he's still showing up for work and he hasn't said he's leaving outright, right? Ms. COYNE: Correct. I mean, this is a tremendous statement that he's written because it's heartfelt, it's funny in places, it's very emotional. And yet... MORALES: Mm-hmm. Ms. COYNE: ...you know, still very calm and reasoned. But he's making himself very clear. The franchise of "The Tonight Show"... MORALES: Right. Ms. COYNE: ...the legendary franchise that is "The Tonight Show," does not begin at 12:05. It doesn't begin the next day. It begins after the late local news. MORALES: Does he leave any room for negotiations here, or does it sound to you that it's all but a done deal? Ms. COYNE: I think he has hopes that it's not a done deal. I mean, he doesn't say goodbye. MORALES: Right. Ms. COYNE: He doesn't say that he's leaving. He actually says that he hopes that he can work with NBC and that a quick resolution will be found. MORALES: Does make for an awkward situation when you're still showing up to do your show until something is resolved, right? Ms. COYNE: Absolutely. But, you know, he is a professional. MORALES: Yeah. Ms. COYNE: So, you know, I think that he would lose a lot of the sympathy that he currently has if he suddenly stopped showing up, or, you know, walked off. MORALES: Sympathy and money because he'd be in breach of his contract. So what are his options if he leaves NBC, because he said also in that letter that he is not negotiating right now and he doesn't have another position lined up as of yet. Ms. COYNE: I don't think he can be negotiating right now. MORALES: Right. Ms. COYNE: He is still under that contract, as you mentioned. So his options right now are probably severely limited... MORALES: Mm-hmm. Ms. COYNE: ...until legal issues are worked out, contract issues are worked out. It's not as though, you know, he can just start fielding offers from other networks. MORALES: Right. Ms. COYNE: He has to sort out what's going on with NBC before he can even entertain the thought of going anywhere else. MORALES: There are a lot of rumors, though, that Fox is still interested in him, as they were five years ago. So is there a possibility he may jump ship? Ms. COYNE: Fox has--Fix has wanted a late-night property for a long time. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Ms. COYNE: It's the one thing that sets them apart from the other networks, is that they don't have late-night programming after their late local news. So this is clearly something that they will be deeply interested in. MORALES: Right. Now one of the things that he also talked about in the letter was that he didn't really have time to build the ratings, that the seven months wasn't enough time. But to that, I mean, did--he also lost some of Leno's audience. Now did--was that because of Conan, because of the show, or is that because of Leno's prime time experiment that sort of backfired and didn't work? Ms. COYNE: Well, you can look at it as having several different factors. In a way, it is a trickle-down effect. MORALES: Right. Ms. COYNE: I mean, what you're hearing, the reason for Leno's move right now is because the affiliates are complaining. The affiliates are complaining... MORALES: Right. Ms. COYNE: ...because of Leno's ratings. So if it's a domino effect and you've got Leno not doing well, and then the late local news not doing well, well, guess what's not going to do well after that? MORALES: Mm-hmm. Ms. COYNE: The show that follows. MORALES: A lot of support, meanwhile, on the blogosphere. A lot of people calling themselves Team Conan. And then there's also the question of what this does to Jay. I mean, does it end up--is there going to be a backlash against him as well? He appearing to be the guy who doesn't want to go, perhaps. Ms. COYNE: It's--it is clear that there's not a ton of sympathy for Jay right now, but by the same token, this was the guy who ruled late-night for 17 years. MORALES: Mm-hmm. Ms. COYNE: If this turns out that Jay is back at 11:35 as the host of "The Tonight Show," there may be some tarnished reputation for a while but he'll probably return to where he was. MORALES: Mm-hmm. All right. Kate Coyne from People magazine, thanks so much, as always. Ms. COYNE: Thank you. 091555 000647 Today's Money 911: Answering Your Questions: Jean Chatzky, David Bach, Carmen Wong Ulrich Answer Viewers' Financial Questions EJ 09:16:28 (:23) VIDEO BOX: Clips from previous "Today's Money 911" segment from 2001-01-05 featuring Today Financial Editor Jean Chatzky, Personal Finance Expert David Bach, and CNBC's Carmen Wong Ulrich. Bach says, "They're going have to work with you, because at your income level now there's simply no way, $50,000 a year, that you can pay those loans back if you've got a high rate." Tina says, "And they want me to pay starting in April $1200 a month. I can no--I cannot do that." Epperson says. "Yeah. You have to work with them." Chatzky says, "Right, and you're going to have to let them know that you simply can't and you are going to have to be persistent and stay on the phone and let them know that you want to pay something, you just can't pay this." GFX: Super "Live Web Video." 09:21:02 Joining from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin over Skype, Heather asks, "Hi. My husband has been serving in Iraq for the last six months. We're halfway through his deployment and I've been able to save $13,000 so far. This is the first and might be the only time we'll be able to save this much money in a short period of time. We owe $12,000 on our car and we're completely upside down in the loan, but we need to get rid of this vehicle within the next couple of months and buy a different vehicle. But we'll also be looking into buying a house within the next two to three years, and everything that we've saved has been intended for a down payment on a house in the future. So since it's going to be harder to put much money into savings after my husband comes home from deployment, would it be better in the long run to not touch our savings and put away as much as possible for a down payment on a house? Or do you use a chunk of that money now to pay down our car loan so that we're closer to even when we go to buy a different vehicle?" Today Financial Editor Jean Chatzky, Personal Finance Expert David Bach, and CNBC's Carmen Wong Ulrich join Amy Robach live in Studio 1A.
