Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust Inquiry published; ENGLAND: London: INT Sir David Nicholson (NHS Chief Executive) interview SOT - I knew the same as any leader in the NHS/ - of course I visited wards at Stafford Hospital - we didn't see the kind of suffering you have described - if we had have seen it we would have acted immediately/ the scale of it we were absolutely unaware of at the time/ - I'm not ashamed of being in my job today, clearly I regret incredibly what happened to those patients/ - it was a whole system failure/ - we treat a millin peole every 36 hours and for the vast majority of them they get great care, but sadly sometimes, care is not as good as it should be/ - people can be assured that we have begun to get the right building blocks in place to make sure it doesn't happen again
