Event Date(s): 06/10/2012 | Event Location(s): Charleston, South Carolina | Description: KATHIE LEE GIFFORD, co-host: Hello, everybody. It's Boozeday Tuesday, June 12th. We're so happy you're here. There's a special guest today in our studio. HODA KOTB, co-host: How cute is little Bambino? GIFFORD: Mr. Bambino. KOTB: Hi, babe. GIFFORD: He came in today. He's going to be part of a fashion show we're going to have a little bit later for, you know, dads and fathers with Father's Day coming up. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: So... KOTB: Hi. So you... GIFFORD: He's got quite the little fan club, this guy. KOTB: He did. So your kids couldn't come so we got Bam? Is that what happened? GIFFORD: Well, I asked my children to come. You can imagine what they said. KOTB: We're excited to have Bambino. And we're actually going to use him in the chat for something, aren't we? GIFFORD: Are we? KOTB: Heh, heh, heh, heh. GIFFORD: Oh, that! KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: Yes, yes. KOTB: We'll reveal--do you want to do it now or you want to wait? GIFFORD: Well, there's supposed--there's a--there's a study basically that says... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...we all know that dogs just have--they are man's friend, woman's best friend, too. They always have a sense of when you're hurting, you know? They lick--they'll come over and lick your wounds, you know? KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: And get close to you and snuggle. So we wanted to sort of test that... KOTB: Because they... GIFFORD: ...because they say it works even with strangers. KOTB: They say if a stranger cries in the presence of a dog, even if the dog doesn't know... GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: ...the other person, that the dog reacts to the other person. So... GIFFORD: So... KOTB: ...we're going to put this to the test. You hold him. GIFFORD: OK, you ready? KOTB: You hold him. GIFFORD: OK. KOTB: And I'm going to start crying. OK, ready? (Cries) What's he doing? GIFFORD: He's having Boozeday Tuesday. KOTB: Hello. GIFFORD: No, he said... KOTB: Someone is hurting. GIFFORD: ...`Get me--get me away from this crazy woman.' KOTB: Maybe he knew I was fake crying. GIFFORD: Yes, yes. KOTB: OK. All right. GIFFORD: If I did it, he'd go crazy. KOTB: He would? GIFFORD: Yeah, of course, of course. KOTB: OK. Well, because he loves you so much. GIFFORD: Yes, he loves his mama. KOTB: All right. So if you want to get off the couch because you're so sick and tired of your body and your flab and all that, we all are there. Here's someone who's going to motivate you to get off the couch. This is unbelievable, isn't it? GIFFORD: Is this unbelievable? KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: And it happened because she went bathing suit shopping. KOTB: She was in her 50s. GIFFORD: When she was in her 50s. And was so upset about how she felt about herself and how she looked. Well, she is 75-year-old Ernestine Shepherd. And... INT MS: 75-year-old Ernestine Shepherd seen speaking to a group of people. KOTB: That's her. Look at her body. STILL: Photo of Shepherd during a body-building contest. STILL: Photo of Shepherd holding a body-building trophy next to an unidentified man. INT CU: Shepherd seen lifting weights. BRIEF CUTS: Shepherd seen working out and body-building. GIFFORD: ...she is--she is 75. Did I say 75? She's the world's oldest female bodybuilder. KOTB: So she just decided at 56 that she had had enough. So she started--imagine at 56 starting lifting weights and started running. GIFFORD: She got in shape. KOTB: Oh, hello. GIFFORD: But at 71 is when she started the bodybuilding. KOTB: Come on. GIFFORD: At 71. She gets up at 2:30 in the morning, runs 10 miles before she goes to the gym. Hoda, you are an amateur. KOTB: Look at that. GIFFORD: You're an amateur. KOTB: Look at--look at her. She's 71--or 75. STILL: Photo of Shepherd during a body-building contest. GIFFORD: She's a professional bodybuilder. She's five-foot-five, weighs 140 pounds and has 9 to 10 percent body fat. KOTB: I mean, look, the whole thing is sometimes, especially when you reach a certain point, because we've all felt that way, you're like, `You know what, it's--I'm stuck with it, it's because I'm going through menopause, it's because of this time.' GIFFORD: We make all kinds of excuses. KOTB: We do. This woman got off--I cannot believe... GIFFORD: She's amazing. KOTB: ...she's up at 2:30 running. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: She's so motivated. So if you think you can't do it, look at her body. She has a body that's better than 30 year olds. GIFFORD: I've told the story about my mom when she went shopping for a bathing suit... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...in Rehoboth... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...years and years ago, and she struggles into a bathing suit, and this lovely lady's helping her... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...and then these two girls, young girls, get in--are in the stall next to her... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...and they're in their little string bikinis and everything. And they come out and the lady coaxes my mom out... KOTB: Oh. GIFFORD: ...says, `Come on, Mrs. Epstein.' KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: `Come on, come on.' So the two little girls in their darling little bodies are going, `Oh. Mm,' having fun looking in one mirror, and my mother comes out and just stands there in front of her mirror, and the lady was so sweet, she looks at my mom and she goes, `Oh, honey, we had our turn.' KOTB: Oh. But we want another turn. GIFFORD: I know. That's the trouble. And Ernestine, Miss Ernie... KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: ...has proven that that's the point, Joanie should have said, `Yeah, and I want another turn.' KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: And, Joanie... KOTB: There you have it. GIFFORD: Let's get my mom to be a bodybuilder at 82. KOTB: You know what, it's--you can--you can just retool your body, you can. GIFFORD: You can do anything. Yep, yep, yep. KOTB: All right. So they--in Middleborough, Massachusetts, it's a--it's a town there, they've decided they've had it with people swearing in public. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: They have had it up to here. So they decided to impose a fine, a $20 fine. And they say it's not meant to censor people but it's supposed to crack down on that kind of language in public. GIFFORD: It's like cleaning up litter. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Because it's really changing the whole ambiance of the environment, you know? KOTB: If you've ever walked down a street, and I've done this a ton of times, someone's on the phone... GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: ...and they're in the middle of a conversation and they're dropping the F-bomb and everything all over, because they're in this heated moment and they don't realize that everybody in the world's walking past them. And they—and I have to tell you--I mean I--you know, I've spoken with people a lot of times--they get animated, they use curse words, it doesn't really bother me--hearing it, walking past it, for some reason only hearing half the conversation and a stranger screaming... GIFFORD: Yeah, it's a pretty--extremely rude. KOTB: ...it makes you feel--yeah. GIFFORD: And lots of times there are little kids and stuff around, too, and you just don't--it's just not an environment anybody wants to live in. KOTB: I wonder if the $20 thing is a--is a good thing to do or not. What do you think? GIFFORD: I guess they're going to vote on it, right? KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: It's not--they can't do it without a town vote. KOTB: And I think, too, like at ball games, if you've ever taken your child to a--to a football game or a baseball game... GIFFORD: Oh. KOTB: ...or any kind of game, everyone goes crazy. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: Did you ever have that with your kids, when kids--other people were cursing around you guys? GIFFORD: You know, I just think in the last 10 years... KOTB: Yeah. It got worse. GIFFORD: ...it's gotten so bad. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Yeah. Yeah. What do you think, Bambino? KOTB: (Cries) GIFFORD: Oh. KOTB: Did you put him over by me? Are you doing it on purpose? That doesn't count. GIFFORD: You got to be really careful because Bambino is known to hump things, so... KOTB: Thanks for the warning. OK. So when you go to a restaurant, there are... GIFFORD: He's our humper. All our children are different and we love them all. KOTB: Sweet. OK. So if you've been to a restaurant recently, there are certain, I guess, normal complaints people have about restaurants when they go... GIFFORD: Right. KOTB: ...and sometimes it's lousy service. GIFFORD: Usually it's service mostly. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Right, right. KOTB: But now there's something new that's out there, and people are tired of the noise level. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: Have you ever been in a restaurant and you can't hear the person you're sitting next to because it sounds like this and you're trying to talk. GIFFORD: Especially if you're at a table of eight or something... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...and you're trying to talk to the... KOTB: Hi. What? Did you say something? GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: All... GIFFORD: And then you introduce hearing aids, you know, that people are wearing because a lot of our friends are wearing hearing aids these days. KOTB: What? GIFFORD: And it's just ridiculous. And then you get hoarse, you know, you... KOTB: It's a weird thing. Some restaurants--I know when I go in--some of them aren't even that crowded, but the way the ceiling is or something... GIFFORD: Yeah, the acoustics. KOTB: ...you can't--yeah, you really can't have a conversation. GIFFORD: Yeah. Yeah. KOTB: And they... GIFFORD: They think there's a science behind it, though. They say that if you play loud music, it prompts the customers to chew faster, order more drinks, finish their meals sooner. KOTB: I love it. I'm so hungry and thirsty. GIFFORD: It makes me leave because... KOTB: Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. I like them. Oh. Oh, my God. He's sexy and he knows it. GIFFORD: He's crossing it. KOTB: Oh, do the--now just in case you were wondering, if you wonder if the noise levels are too high for you, there's a website called Yelp and there's another one called Open Table. If you go on it now they actually tell you about the decibel levels. You can... GIFFORD: They list it. So--yeah, I think they should listen to people. They want to be cool... KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: ...but at the same time, you don't want customers avoiding you because--Joanne was telling us a story she--about a restaurant that she and her family love out near where she lives in... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...Montclair... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...and three times at three different times of the day they went to see if it's different any--and it wasn't. KOTB: It was always the same. GIFFORD: It was always the same. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: So you got to serve your customer. KOTB: Right, you sure do. OK. Now there is another study, yet another one out there... GIFFORD: Mm-hmm. KOTB: ...and it says--it talks about sex and fashion, and it says that women think about fashion... GIFFORD: La, la, la. KOTB: ...91 times a day. Many more times than they think about sex. GIFFORD: That's once every 11 minutes and 23 seconds, if you're wondering. KOTB: That's ridiculous. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: How is that possible? GIFFORD: It's... KOTB: Who's thinking about fashion 91 times a day? GIFFORD: Well, it's--I don't think we tend to think of it as fashion, but if you're walking by somebody, you say, `Oh, I love that dress.' KOTB: Or `I like her haircut.' GIFFORD: Or you're just--I drive down here... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...on 49th or 48th every morning... KOTB: Yeah. Yeah. GIFFORD: ...and I go--I look in the Michael Kors, you know... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...and Saks Fifth Avenue and something catches your eye. So I guess that's what they mean. KOTB: Or you compliment somebody's shoes. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: OK. We think about sex 10 times a day. I don't. Do you? GIFFORD: No. KOTB: Men... GIFFORD: When you've had as much of it as I've had... KOTB: Uh-huh, huh, huh, huh. GIFFORD: ...it just, you know. KOTB: (Cries) This is never going to work. That was weird. OK. So at a ball game yesterday... GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: ...there was a rain delay at a ball game and you always sit there and you watch these rain delays. Well, there was some man who decided to have some fun with the rain delay, so he went running out onto the field and he was sliding all over it. And I was like, `Who is that crazy old man?' So I just saw the video. Well, you know who it is? EXT DAY CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA 2012-06-10 BRIEF CUTS: Actor Bill Murray, seen through a chain-link fence, runs and slides around a baseball field during a rain delay at a minor league baseball game. GIFFORD: That crazy old man is Bill Murray. KOTB: Bill Murray! He--I guess he's part-owner of that team and he decided... GIFFORD: Oh, gosh. KOTB: ...that he was going to have some fun with the--wow. GIFFORD: I bet the crowd went crazy. KOTB: I bet they did. GIFFORD: There he goes, sliding into home. KOTB: That is just crazy. Anyway. GIFFORD: Have you ever met Bill Murray? KOTB: I think we--didn't we have him on? GIFFORD: I don't know if we've had him on since I joined you, Hoda. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: But many times years ago when... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...he--and he is--he is a character. KOTB: He's... GIFFORD: Oh, my gosh, he is a... KOTB: Such fun, right? GIFFORD: That's Bill Murray. Great actor.
