I am convinced in my own mind that this is the only concept on which we can build a happy and united nation. The alternative, which gropes towards a bogus equality by way of endless subsidy and restriction, cannot be right for us British as a nation. Indeed, it has already proved to be a failure. There is nothing divisive in a society where the able and the energetic are encouraged to succeed and where the community ensures that part of the fruits of their success go to give effective help to those who stand in real need. That in fact is the real basis of one nation. The strong and the successful can help the weak and less fortunate. This is the philosophy which inspires the changes which we have made. It will inspire actions our actions as a government in the future and upon its success will depend the future of this country and of its people. Not simply during the next five years, but for decades to come. [Applause as seated]
