Hundreds protest in Amsterdam against anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders' election victory

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS - NOVEMBER 24: Hundreds of people gathered at Dam Square in the Dutch city of Amsterdam on Friday evening (Nov. 24) against a far-right party’s election victory. In a striking turn of events, Geert Wilders, the veteran anti-Islam populist leader, has clinched a resounding triumph in the Dutch general election. The demonstration held in Dam Square reflected public concern and opposition to the ascent of Wilders' far-right and Islamophobic Freedom Party (PVV), which emerged as the top contender in the early general elections on November 22.Wednesday's general election in the Netherlands has produced an unpredicted win for far-right politician Geert Wilders' Party for Freedom, as it won 34 seats in the 150-seat parliament with 98% of the votes counted. Wilders, who is a staunch anti-Islam populist, has doubled his party's votes since 2021, with one fourth of votes cast for PVV, the Dutch acronym for the Party for Freedom.
