The Maasai tribe are an indigenous ethnic group in Africa mostly settled in Kenya and northern Tanzania. The Maasai are among the foremost African ethnic groups and are known internationally for their unique culture and tribal dress. The International Day of Indigenous Peoples is observed on Aug. 9 every year with an aim to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups. The theme of this year’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is youth. The UN celebrates "young Indigenous Peoples, and their role in creating change and shaping the future." There are an estimated 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest, according to the UN. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. (Footage by Gerald Anderson /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
