Istanbul’s iconic Grand Bazaar temporarily closed amid coronavirus precautions
ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MARCH 24: Exteriors shots of Istanbul's historic Grand Bazaar on March 24, 2020. The Grand Bazaar (“Kapalı Çarşı” in Turkish) has been temporarily closed on Monday (March 23) within the measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. (01:01:15) Archive footage of the Grand Bazaar taken in 2019. As Turkey confirms new cases the number of the grand Bazaar visitors had plummeted considerably due to the virus. The historical structure which is one of the oldest surviving shopping centers in the world was normally filled with large groups of tourists. The colorful Grand Bazaar is the heart of Istanbul's Old City and has been so for centuries. Starting as a small vaulted bedesten (warehouse) it was built by the order of Mehmet the Conqueror in 1461. It has been one of the most important and oldest trade centers of Istanbul for more than 500 years, attracting enthusiasts of all ages and incorporating a rich cultural structure. The 560-year-old building with 64 streets has been housing more than 2,500 shops. Turkey confirmed its first case of the coronavirus early on March 11. Since then, the government has taken a series of precautions against the spread of the virus, including shutting down schools, universities, bars, nightclubs, cinemas, cafes, spas, amusement parks, and swimming pools. The country reported seven more deaths from coronavirus late on Monday (March 23), bringing the total number of fatalities to 37. More than 20,000 coronavirus tests have been done so far on people suspected of contracting the virus, and 293 tested positive in the last 24 hours, bringing the tally of infections to 1,529.
