Military Presence in Algiers
Soldiers with the Algerian armed forces patrol the streets of Algiers in military tanks after riots broke out, instigated by rising food prices in a country with an unemployment rate of more than 18%. Islamic fundamentalist demonstrations and riots against Algerian President Chadli Bendjedid were severely repressed by the military, which killed hundreds of young urban poor civilians seeking work, decent housing, and public services. The riots were the most serious since Algeria gained independence in 1962. (Photo by © Patrick Robert/Sygma/CORBIS/Sygma via Getty Images)
