Netherlands - Tradition - Sinterklaas festivities

The centuries old tradition from which the mythical Santa Claus is derived, Sinterklaas, born in 280, Sint Nicolaas or Saint Nicolas, a bishop from Turkey and patron saint of children arrives in the Netherlands on a boat from Spain every mid november before the Sinterklaas celebration on December 5th and 6th. He parades his horse in the streets as thousands look on. He is accompanied by a young African looking helper of Moorish descent called Zwarte Piet or Black Pete, the black servant. Legend says that he came from a slave background. White Dutchmen paint their faces black, put on red lipstick and woolly Afro wigs an enchanting Dutch cultural institution for most but an offense for some. This tradition has a significant boost impact on the Dutch economy. Zarte Piets arrive at harbor (Photo by John van Hasselt/Corbis via Getty Images)
