A South African hard hat known as 'Makarapas' made for the Spanish football team...A South African hard hat known as 'Makarapas' made for the Spanish football team and its supporters is pictured in Johannesburg on March 24, 2010. The 'Makarapas', a decorated plastic hard hat to be settled on supporters' heads, are created by fans who carve shapes into the hats and adorn them with team colours, a process that can take four days to complete. As the world prepares for Africa's first World Cup, interest is growing in the continent, especially since the governing body FIFA ordered 2,000 Makarapas for twelve of the top teams from Wygers' factory in downtown Johannesburg. The Makarapa is, with the vuvuzela trumpet, an important part of the local football matches' festival atmosphere. Makarapas are hand-cut and hand painted miner hard hats in the colours of a team.
