Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam in Kerala which is famous for its backwater tourism. It is set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in the state of Kerala. Vembanad (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol) is the second largest lagoon in India. Spanning several districts in the state of Kerala, it is known as Vembanadu Lake in Kottayam, Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad and Kochi Lake in Kochi. The kettuvallams (Kerala houseboats) in the backwaters are one of the prominent tourist attractions in Kerala.
