Game of ‘Shogi’ Japanese Chess Comes To Life At Himeji Castle

Video footage taken on November 4,2017,Japan, at a ground at Himeji Castle in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, shows a “shogi” Japanese chess match being played on an 18-square-meter board with samurai-costumed junior high school students serving as the kings and pawns. The life-sized match is said to have a precedent in a game staged by 16th-century warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi and has been restaged since 2015. Two young female players from separate shogi schools gave their commands by microphones in the heated battle that lasted about 90 minutes.
