30-Meter-Tall Christmas Tree Delivered to Kobe to Brighten up Holiday Season

Video footage taken from the air on Nov. 17 in Kobe shows a crane lowering an “asunaro” tree towering to about 30 meters high into a steel container at the waterfront Meriken Park. Claimed to be one of the world’s largest living Christmas trees, the asunaro thujopsis is estimated to be about 150 years old and weigh about 24 tons. The tree, a type of cypress, was dug up in Himi, Toyama Prefecture, and transported by land and sea. It will be illuminated from Dec. 2 to 26 to symbolize the city’s recovery from the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake and encourage victims of other earthquake disasters.
