Dancing Straw Men Cause A Splash In Snowy Yamagata Prefecture Festival

Thirty-five men dressed like haystacks and wearing straw sandals marched, spun around and shouted chants amid a snowfall in central Kaminoyama, Yamagata Prefecture, on Feb. 11 as part of a religious custom said to date back about 400 years. The “Kasedori” ritual also saw residents and spectators splashing water on the dancers, who were bare-legged and bare-chested under their straw cones. The tradition said to be rooted in the early Edo Period (1603-1867) was revived in 1959. The video was taken by Nobuaki Tanaka of The Asahi Shimbun.
