Kyoto's Historic Byodoin Temple hall Puts on Light Show For 1st Time

The famed 1,000-year-old Hoo-do, or Phoenix Hall, of Byodoin temple here will be lit up for the first time from Nov. 18 as part of a special limited night visit event. The Phoenix Hall, originally constructed in 1053, completed a major renovation three years ago. However, the temple, a World Heritage site, has never been open to the public at night for visits. A special preview event for local residents and special guests was held Nov. 17. Lighting on the temple buildings alternated every five minutes, casting the complex--widely regarded as one of Japan's most beautiful structures--in a rich glow.
